What is a FSSAI Registration – An overview?

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a statutory body established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. The FSSAI has been established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which is a consolidating statute related to food safety and regulation in India. FSSAI is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety. All businesses effecting inter-state outward supplies of goods have to register for a GST too. The same applies to businesses making taxable supplies by the Agents and Brokers of that taxable person.

FSSAI Registration/ Licence is a 14-digit number which is printed on all the food packages that are available in the market. This 14-digit registration number holds all the details regarding the assembling state & the producer’s permit. With the help of FSSAI Registration or License, the government is aiming to create a more accountable system to assure the quality of food products in India.

It ensures protection and promotion of public health by ensuring the quality, purity & other important factors, through the regulation and supervision of food safety. The standard, principles & control of all the food businesses in India is governed by FSSAI. 

WEF 1st June 2020, FSSAI launched and replaced FSSAI license with FoSCoS license (Food Safety Compliance System). Through FoSCoS, you can obtain food license in India.

TYPES OF FSSAI License in India

There are 3 types of FSSAI/FoSCoS license,that are available in India. These are:

1.) FSSAI-FoSCoS Basic License:

FSSAI-FoSCoS Basic License is mandatory for small food business operators like food manufacturers, storage units, transporter units, retailers, marketers & Distributers having an annual turnover of upto 12 lakhs. This license is issued by the State Government. The licence tenure is from minimum of 1 year to a maximum of 5 years.

2.) FSSAI-FoSCoS State License:

FSSAI-FoSCoS State License is mandatory for small to medium sized food business operators & manufacturers, storage units, transporters, retailer, marketers & distributers having an annual turnover of more than 12 lakhs. This license is issued by State Government with a rule that you must have the operations in only one state. The license tenure is same as that of Basic License i.e. minimum of 1 year to a maximum of 5 years.

3.) FSSAI-FoSCoS Central License:

FSSAI-FoSCoS Central License is mandatory for large scale food business operators like Importers, large manufacturers, export oriented operators etc, having an annual turnover of more than 20 crores. This license is issued by Central Government. This license is obtained for the head office in case an operator is running his/her business in multiple states. The license tenure is for a minimum of 1 year to a maximum of 5 years.
